What I Learned! [Dec. 6th, 2006|02:14 pm]
Social Problems - Fall 2006

During this semester I actually learned a great deal. Ever since I "woke up" and became more self and socially aware, I've always thought of myself as pretty fair and open minded. This class really helped me futher open my eyes to a few things, while at the same time helping to reinforce some of the things I had already thought. Growing up in a place that disagrees with most of what you think, it was quite nice to actually take a class that basically backs up and completely supports your position. I'll definitely walk away from this class with new knowledge that will help me throughout life, especially when interacting with others.

I have learned so much through not only my project but through the other presentations that there are many social issues out there that have yet to be resolved. Many questions that don’t have answers to them and some that do have solutions but the movements die off because of the lack of support.

All of the presentations thus far have been quite inquisitive and insightful. I even learned about issues that I never realized were big issues in America. For example, the presentation about Father’s rights. The facts and statistics that they gave were remarkable and society sometimes doesn’t recognized the fact that fathers should have the right as the mothers do. It is so unfortunate that Fathers who DO care about their children don’t get to be in the child(ren)’s lives.

All of the presentations were good and definitely left me wondering why is the world this way?….

This was one of my favourite classes this semester. I enjoyed learning about social isses and probelems that directly affect me. I enjoyed our relaxed class setting, and group disscuions. It was fun to learn how other people percieve problems, espically when their view is polar to yours. I'm going to miss this class next semster. Also we watched some really good films including MURDER BALL and the film on disparities in the educational system in America, i learned about things I would have not otherwise known about. It was an awsome semester and thanks professor Bender for being so rad!

Take-aways [Dec. 6th, 2006|02:18 pm]

This sociology class was extremely fulfilling. The one major thing that I'll taking away from this class is the fact that the only way to effectively change any major social issue is to attack the institution. Attempting to solve it any other way will only net temporary results. This is apparent when you look at the disparity regarding the quality of education in our country. The chapter that delt with disabilities and ableism was also one that I learned a lot from. It was interesting to know how much individuals with disabilities were being discriminated against and how much these individuals could make a legitimate impact if given the opportunity.

I learned many things in this class. Before I took this class, I knew there were problems in this world, this country, but I only thought about it in general terms. Looking and reading all the numbers and graphs made me realize how it actually is. I really enjoyed the movie about the wheelchair sport..Rugby? Also the movie about Disney. I'm the type of person that takes things as it is...I don't really question its authority. This class showed me different perspectives of a subject. I really enjoyed learning these materials, although some were depressing and sad.

During my time in this class, I have learned so much about family, education, and society. How everytihng works and how people treat each other. One of the main things I learned about was the social norms. How they are not a set of rules written down, but they are on display everyday. Another thing I learned about was family. How family plays a major role in every ones life and in society.

Reflecting on what we've learned [Dec. 6th, 2006|12:02 pm]

It is always a privilege to learn more about the world surrounding you and its problems. It is equally important how to help change some of life crisis. The Advocacy letter was rewarding because it allowed me to express my deepest concerns about Afrikan's heritage-Egypt.
It is also good to allow our emotion and feelings be express as we hear about things we disagree upon and that was the case with the issues concerning homosexual rights. I feel we've learned that all do not see things in the same perspective be it religion or political, and or social and that we should learn to respect each other views.
I also learned that we really need to do something about our education system, poor white and black children are suffering and that is heartbreaking! As a former educator and counselor, I feel that it would be right  to write a letter and to consult with other on forming some type of social movement or even joined one that has already organized for equal education for all of US children.
I also would like to thank the Instructor for bring out information that I was not aware and to my classmates who pointed out very knowledgeable information that made you think. I also would like to thank Ms. Daley and Ivan Hodges-my groupies for their excellent input on our assignment.
My final challenge to all of my classmates is let's not leave here with the knowledge and  do nothing with it. Please let us make a different and help change some of the social issues that we've learned in this class. All of the Presentation so far were wonderful!

I reeeeallyyyy learned during this class. It gave me another perspective about society and about why we think the way we do. I never thought about gender roles and inequality the way we discussed it in class. And how kids shape their behavior because of society. Also, I didn't know anything about people with disabilities, this class really helped me a lot to understand a little bit more about their lives and the hardships they go through. Actually, this class has also made me very sad about the world and how unjust, unequal, and unfair everything is. And even the things that we can do something about it we leave them the way they are and some of us even promote this inequalities. I also learned about the government and its corruption. And about how the ones that are on top one to leave things the way they are. I loved this class! I have a new perspective of life now.

What I've learned [Dec. 6th, 2006|03:11 pm]

I've learned that society moulds our way of thinking. We may think that we are very open minded however, we follow social norms. One of the discussions that I liked the most was the one about homosexuality because it made me think and it helped me realize that I have been biased against homosexuals. For example, I'm dont agree with gay marriages but then I was thinking about it and saying "no you cant marry because you are gay" is as unfair as saying "no you cant drink from this water fountain because you arent white." I also liked the documentary about Disney. At first I didnt see anything wrong with it but now I do because I realize that I didnt see anything wrong with it because I grew up watching Disney movies and i never questioned them. Overall, i really liked this like i was able to learn many things about society and about myself.
